Azir Moris celebrates Mandela Day in Albion, Mauritius

Mr Mandela has spent 67 years making the world a better place. We’re asking you for 67 minutes.

Responding to a call by the UN to celebrate Nelson Mandela‘s birthday this year on the theme “67 minutes of your time “, Azir Moris has devoted 67 minutes (and a little bit more) to helping others, in Albion, Mauritius.

How did that day come about ?

The idea of Mandela Day was inspired by Nelson Mandela at his 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008 when he said: “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now.”

In November 2009, the UN General Assembly declared 18 July “Nelson Mandela International Day” in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.

General Assembly resolution A/RES/64/13 recognizes Nelson Mandela’s values and his dedication to the service of humanity, in the fields of conflict resolution, race relations, the promotion and protection of human rights, reconciliation, gender equality and the rights of children and other vulnerable groups, as well as the upliftment of poor and underdeveloped communities. It acknowledges his contribution to the struggle for democracy internationally and the promotion of a culture of peace throughout the world.

Just enough to inspire Azir Moris

Led by its leader Jameel Peerally, helped by Angelica Capillaire and Izra Peerally, Azir Moris met 20 needy families in the Albion regions of Camps Creole and Pelican for a distribution of some food stuff and school gears for children.
